Santiago Island

"The African Soul, History and Natural Contrasts"

Over het eiland

Santiago is the largest island in the archipelago and home to the country's capital, Praia. It is the historical and cultural heart of Cape Verde, where the African heritage is felt with greatest intensity. Between steep mountains and green valleys, you will find some of the country's most stunning bays, highlighting the paradisiacal Tarrafal beach.

Hoe er te komen

Per vliegtuig: Nelson Mandela International Airport (RAI) in Praia - daily direct flights from Lisbon, Dakar, Boston, and domestic flights.
Over zee: Port of Praia connects daily with passenger and cargo boats to Fogo and Maio.

Klimaat en beste seizoen

October to June (to avoid the rainy season of August and September, although the mountains turn beautifully green during that time). De gemiddelde watertemperatuur varieert van 23°C (73°F) in de winter tot 27°C (81°F) in de late zomer.

Gastronomie en cultuur

Batuque and Tabanka were born here, vibrant rhythms of traditional percussion. The Sucupira market in Praia is a whirlwind of colours and aromas where traditional gastronomy is expressed in all its strength.

Insidertip

"In Tarrafal, have dinner at a small beachside restaurant and taste the charcoal-grilled fresh fish caught that day by local fishermen landing their colorful boats right in front."
