Sea Turtle Protection
Nesting Caretta caretta
Cape Verde (especially Boa Vista, Sal, and Maio) is the 3rd largest nesting area for Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) sea turtles worldwide, active from July to October.
Never use white light flashlights or camera flashes on the beach at night. Artificial light disorients the nesting turtles and prevents them from laying eggs.
If you encounter a turtle on the beach, stay back (minimum 15 meters), stay quiet, and always position yourself behind her field of vision.
Only book nocturnal turtle-watching tours with certified local guides or recognized ecological NGOs (like "Projecto Biodiversidade" or "Biosfera").
