About the Island
Santo Antão is the westernmost and most mountainous island, world-famous for its spectacular trekking trails along dizzying canyons. Its northern and western coast displays volcanic black sand beaches and rocky beaches of rare dramatic beauty, contrasting the lush green of agricultural valleys with the deep blue of the rough ocean.
How to Get There
By Air: Does not have an active airport. Access is exclusively by ferry from Mindelo (São Vicente).
By Sea: Several daily ferries make the 60-minute crossing between Mindelo and Porto Novo.
Climate & Best Season
September to May (excellent temperature for hiking and refreshing swims). The average water temperature ranges from 23°C (73°F) in winter to 27°C (81°F) in late summer.
Gastronomy & Culture
Famous for the traditional production of genuine "Trapiche Grogue" (sugar cane rum) in the deep valleys of Paul and Ribeira Grande. The inhabitants are extraordinarily warm and welcoming.
