Santo Antão is famous for trekking trails, but its coastline hides gems: volcanic black sand beaches contrasting with green cliffs.
Tarrafal de Monte Trigo is the best-kept secret. A sheltered bay, extremely calm sea and fine ash sand warmed by the sun.
Access requires a 4x4 jeep or boat from Porto Novo — and that difficulty is exactly what keeps the place untouched.
Bring the essentials: water, mineral sunscreen and absolute respect for the environment. Local guesthouses serve genuine Creole food.
Combine the beach with a hiking day in the Paul or Ribeira Grande valleys. It is Cape Verde at its most dramatic and authentic.
